Since 2001, the Afghan government has established many new schools, increasing the student population to 9 million children. Unfortunately many challenges are still being faced in ensuring girls’ enrolment, attendance, and continued education beyond primary school. Consequently, 60% of Afghan girls are still missing out on their education today, and within some provinces this number is as high as 85% of school-aged girls. Challenges to ensuring the stable provision of education in Afghanistan include The fragile political situation resulting from the presidential elections in 2019 and the protracted peace process with the Taliban. Reduction of international aid programs and international remittances, and closure of borders to migrant Afghan workers. Continued violence and threat of violence to communities. Poverty. Gender inequalities. The spread of COVID-19 led to the closure of all schools between March and October 2020. The students, and especially the girls, feel the burden of the pandemic heavily. The Afghan Ministry of Economy is warning of significant economic hardship caused by an increase in unemployment and poverty. This will have a direct affect on girls’ access to education, as families will need to conserve their finances and send their children to work. Afghanistan already suffers a high dropout rate from school, solidifying inequality between those with access and those denied access. This inequality continues into adulthood, by denying the adults the means to move their families out of the vulnerable situation, and in turn, their children are also vulnerable to being denied school. |
